Connecting with God | Yvonne Lehman | Monica Carter Tagore
I have had the opportunity to interview quite a few folks over this past year. As usual, I’ve slacked off with blog posts so I thought with a little over three months left in the year, I would attempt catch up on the series I started earlier this year.
How do you find time to connect with God?
I think you mean by that question is: do I set aside a particular time to read the Bible and/or talk to him? Now, I do that first thing in the morning. Currently, I’m in the program of reading the Bible through in two years. I wake up around 7:00 a.m., get a cup of coffee and read the assigned material and then pray. Not long ago I was in the program of reading the Bible in 90 Days. To get 12 pages read a day, I did it first thing in the morning, when I went to the bathroom, and last thing at night.
The Essential Bible Companion
I don’t visit book stores that often, but when I do I always discover gems. There’s nothing like actually grabbing a book off the shelf and reading the back cover, then flipping it open to explore the pages. I’m by no means a bible scholar and as of late have been quite slack with studying. One of the last things I want to do is open up a boring book. Bible study should be exciting. To really go beyond reading words, bible aids help tremendously especially when understanding the culture.
Being a visual person, I love books that offer diagrams, charts, photographs, etc. As much as I read, there are times I like to get information in snapshot. I found The Essential Bible Companion along with another handbook this past spring. I fell in love with the pages in the store. Very colorful and concise, I think anyone can enjoy the research in this book. For a few days, I simply read through the book and found the information to be pretty engrossing.
The Busy Mom’s Guide to Bible Study
Have you been so busy that bible study ends up being the last item on your daily to-do list? Are you ashamed to admit, you get so busy some days you never crack open the bible? Or maybe you read the bible regularly, but you still desire to go deeper?
If you’re a mom struggling to keep up with your children, keep the house clean and keep husband happy, this little book by Lisa Welch maybe a step in the right direction. The former Facts of Life star explains up front she’s not a bible expert, but wants to teach skills that make opening the bible not quite so intimidating.
Bible Resource Center
While I have a nice size library of bible resources, online bible study tools are very helpful when you need to look up a verse quickly or find historical facts. Surfing the Internet, I came across a cool resource at the American Bible Society. You can find a daily bible reading guide and information about donating. This organization is one of my favorites to support.
