Panic or Trust?

I have been reading through Genesis the past few days. God promised Abram on several occassions, that he would have descendents that came from him and Sarai. As they looked at each others old, withering bodies, they panicked and produced Ishmael (Genesis 16). Sarai was under the impression using Hagar would help fulfill God’s plan. Later, she finds she might have made a mistake. Despite the couple’s interference, God’s promise was fulfilled years later as Isaac was born (Genesis 21:3).

Synonyms for PANIC are FEAR, DREAD, FRIGHT, ALARM, PANIC, TERROR, TREPIDATION

Panic can come upon us under varying degrees. Some minor forms of panic may be a simple as suddenly remembering you left groceries in the car, locked yourself out of the house or forgot to use deoderant. Not earth-shattering circumstances, but definitely humbling moments that remind us to slow down.

There are moments of panic that can be life changing. A mom turns around only to find the three foot person ranting about Dora the Explorer is suddenly not by her side. A driver suddenly finds his vehicle in disarray and he is being transported to an emergency room. A fire alarm sounds and a sleeping family awakes to thick smoke. A woman sits on a hospital examination table trying to understand what the doctor is saying … “Is he saying the “c” word to me?” Residents hide in their homes in the hope that the swirling, angry tornado will bypass their home. A city evacuates down the expressway wondering if this next hurricane will be the worse ever.

An emergency may not even be needed for panic or fear to set in. Just waiting and wondering can cause a panic. The rush of emotions can come fast and furious as seemingly impossible and sometimes unbearable circumstance leave us with dread and wondering did God forget. As in the case of Abram and Sarai, over ten years had passed since God asked Abram to move and promised him offspring. Mmmm, wouldn’t you feel a little forgotten?

In some cases panic or fear can be resolved in a matter of seconds, minutes … other times it seems like the months drag into years. Ten. Twenty. Fifty. Only God knows.

If God allowed a circumstance or has us in a waiting period, certainly he has a reason. God will do what he says he is going to do! It will be in his own perfect timing and even more importantly it will be to God’s glory.

I think the most important lesson I have learned during my waiting periods is God will be glorified and I will come out polished on the other side. When we go through our times of panic and fear, we have to tell our emotions to chill and ask the question, “Is anything too hard for the LORD? (Genesis 18:4)” Of course not!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. – Proverbs 3:5
